There is a question almost every patient asks before making a decision: when is the best time of year to have a nose job? And the honest answer is that it depends on more factors than it might seem.
Summer concentrates more rhinoplasty consultations than any other time of year. People have holidays, time to recover and months ahead before returning to their routine. But it is also the season that generates the most doubts: the heat, the sun, the beach, sport. Is it really a good idea to have surgery in July or August?
Why autumn and winter are the most comfortable seasons
From a purely physiological standpoint, the cold months offer more favourable conditions for rhinoplasty recovery. Lower temperatures reduce vasodilation, which translates into less post-operative swelling and less pronounced bruising. The skin also tends to be less active in sebum production, which makes scarring easier in the columella area.
There is also a practical advantage: in autumn and winter it is easier to protect yourself from the sun without drawing attention. During the first weeks after surgery, direct sun exposure on the nose can disrupt healing and cause hyperpigmentation on more sensitive skin. In winter, wearing a hat, scarf or simply avoiding intense sun is natural and requires no extra effort.
October, November and the first months of the year are historically the busiest for surgical activity at clinics specialising in ultrasonic rhinoplasty. Patients who have surgery in autumn arrive at the following summer with a fully settled nose and the definitive results clearly visible.
Summer is not impossible, but there are conditions
Having surgery in summer is perfectly viable if certain conditions are met. Rhinoplasty and heat are not incompatible, but they do require more careful management of recovery.
What to be clear about before scheduling an operation in July or August:
- Beach and swimming pool are off the table for at least six weeks. Salt water and chlorine are irritants for a wound in the healing process, and lying horizontally under direct sun is particularly harmful to swelling.
- Direct sun on the nose must be avoided for three months. If the patient expects to spend the summer outdoors, they need very high SPF sun protection and, in the first days, physical protection with a hat or visor.
- Intense physical activity is prohibited for six weeks. Sport raises blood pressure and can reactivate inflammation in the operated area. Anyone planning an active holiday needs to calculate the timing carefully. You can read more about how long to wait before doing sport after rhinoplasty.
- Extreme heat makes rest harder. The first post-operative nights require sleeping with the head elevated. Heat makes those nights more uncomfortable and can increase the feeling of nasal congestion.
That said, many patients choose June or early July precisely because the holidays allow them to rest without work concerns. If surgery is scheduled for early June, by the end of July the visible recovery phase is already over and August can be enjoyed normally, respecting the sun and sport restrictions.
Spring: the window nobody mentions and that makes the most sense
March, April and May are perhaps the most balanced window of the year for a rhinoplasty and, curiously, the least talked about. Temperatures are moderate, the sun is not yet intense, and most patients have their working life active but can manage a week off without it coinciding with their busiest periods.
Having surgery in spring has one very concrete additional advantage: by summer, the residual swelling — which with ultrasonic rhinoplasty is significantly less than with the traditional technique — will have almost completely disappeared. The patient arrives at summer with the nose in an advanced stage of consolidation, can go to the beach with care and enjoys the results before the year is out.
What really influences the ideal timing for each patient
Beyond the season, there are individual factors that weigh just as much — or more — when choosing when to have surgery.
Skin type is one of them. Patients with thick or oily skin benefit especially from operating in cool months, as this skin type takes longer to contract over the new structure and the cold helps control inflammation. For thinner skin, the seasonal window is wider.
Work and personal situation also determines the timing. A seven-to-ten-day recovery period is enough to get through the most visible phase — the time with the nasal splint and initial bruising — but in-person meetings, work trips or unavoidable social commitments need to be factored in. Most patients prefer to operate at a time when they can get through that first week discreetly.
For a revision rhinoplasty or a procedure that combines aesthetics and function — such as a rhinoseptoplasty — recovery times may be somewhat longer and the planning margin needs to be greater.
Recovery with ultrasonic rhinoplasty changes the calculation
One of the strongest arguments for the ultrasonic technique, beyond the aesthetic result, is precisely the recovery. By not using chisels or mallets on the nasal bone, surgical trauma is significantly lower. This translates into:
- Less periorbital bruising (the under-eye bruising that characterises traditional rhinoplasty).
- More contained post-operative swelling that subsides faster.
- Faster return to social life, in many cases from the eighth or tenth day onwards.
This reduction in visible recovery time widens the seasonal window. A patient who has ultrasonic rhinoplasty in July has a more manageable recovery than one operated with conventional technique in October. Post-operative follow-up remains just as important, but the first days are less limiting.
Surgery in Valladolid or Santander: logistics matter too
For patients travelling from outside Valladolid or Cantabria to have surgery with Dr Pérez Villar, seasonal planning has an additional logistical dimension. Procedures are performed in Valladolid and at Hospital Santa Clotilde in Santander, and the standard protocol includes a review seven days after the operation.
Many patients from other provinces take advantage of summer holidays or autumn bank holidays to coordinate the operation and the review without needing to take extra days off work. The prior free online medical assessment allows all of this to be planned in advance without needing to travel for an in-person first consultation.
Clínica Pérez Villar in Cantabria also sees patients from northern Spain looking for an ultrasonic rhinoplasty specialist without having to travel to Madrid or Barcelona, and also offers other facial aesthetic medicine and surgery treatments for those who want to address several things in a single visit.
What those who have already been through it say
Among the reviews from operated patients, timing comes up frequently. Some admit having waited months longer than necessary out of fear of choosing the wrong season, when in reality planning with the medical team would have resolved all their doubts from the start.
The reality is that there is no universally perfect time of year. There is the right time for each person, based on their life, their work, their skin type and their plans. What is constant is that the sooner the consultation takes place, the sooner a decision can be made with proper information and without rushing.
If you have doubts about when the best time would be in your specific case, you can request a free online medical assessment and receive personalised guidance before making any decision.
